International standards:

Round bars: According to EN 13601, the diameter range is 2-80 mm, suitable for general electrical purposes.

Rectangular/polygonal bars: thickness 2-40 mm, width 3-200 mm (such as square, hexagonal bars).

Tolerance requirements:

Round bars: when the length is ≤1000mm, the full-length diameter deviation is ≤2mm; when the length is >3000mm, the deviation is ≤12mm.

Square/hexagonal bars: when the length is ≤1000mm, the side length deviation is ≤5mm; when the length is >3000mm, the deviation is ≤15mm.

Typical specifications:

Common diameters include Φ12mm, Φ18mm, Φ32mm, etc., and the length can reach more than 800mm.

In industrial applications, large-size copper bars with diameters of 4 inches (about 101.6mm) and lengths of 12 feet (about 3.66 meters) are also available.

3. International Standards

Chinese Standard: GB/T 8320-2003 specifies the composition and performance requirements of tungsten copper alloys, applicable to CuW70.

American Standard: ASTM B702 covers the manufacturing and inspection standards for tungsten copper alloys.

European Standard: EN 13601 sets requirements for the composition, dimensional tolerances and electrical properties of copper rods for electrical purposes

Copper (Cu) content: 28%~32% (usually marked as 30%±2%)

Tungsten (W) content: remainder (about 70%)

Total impurities: ≤0.5%

Density: 13.8~14 g/cm³

High density mainly comes from the high specific gravity of tungsten (19.25 g/cm³), which is achieved through a composite process.

Hardness:

Brinell hardness (HB) ≥175~184

High hardness is due to the strengthening effect of tungsten, suitable for high temperature and high pressure environments.

Strength:

Flexural strength: ≥667~790 MPa

Tensile strength: ≥790 MPa (partial data)

Strength differences may be due to test methods (such as flexural strength and tensile strength) or process fluctuations.

Conductivity:

Conductivity ≥42% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard)

Resistivity ≤4.1 μΩ·cm, close to 1/2 of pure copper, balancing the needs of conductivity and arc ablation resistance.

Thermal properties:

Melt temperature ≥700℃, can withstand high temperatures above 1080℃ (copper melting point) in actual use.

Low thermal expansion coefficient, not easy to soften at high temperatures.

The production process and product advantages of W70Cu3/WCu70 copper rods are as follows:

1. Production process

Powder metallurgy process

High-purity tungsten powder and copper powder are mixed, and the blank is formed by static pressing, and then refined by a composite process of high-temperature sintering and copper infiltration. This process combines the high melting point characteristics of tungsten with the plasticity advantages of copper to ensure high material density and uniform structure.

Some optimized processes will combine high-temperature infiltration and die forging to further improve the relative density (up to 99.5%) and thermal conductivity (195 W/m·K) of the material and reduce porosity.

Traditional processing technology

Casting and extrusion: Copper ingots are produced through large-tonnage horizontal continuous casting furnaces, and then copper rods are formed by reverse extruders, and finally straightened and finished by combined drawing technology.

Forging and stretching: The cast copper block is finally formed through cutting, peeling and stretching. Some processes involve post-processing of smelting waste copper and electrolytic copper.

Hot stamping process: After the purchased copper rod is heated to 600~700℃, it is stamped and formed by a hot stamping machine, which is suitable for complex shape processing.

2. Product advantages

Performance advantages

High electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity: The copper phase provides excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, which is suitable for high-voltage electrical appliances such as electrodes and electrical contacts.

High temperature resistance and ablation resistance: The high melting point of tungsten (3410℃) enables the material to withstand instantaneous temperature rise of thousands of degrees Celsius under arc impact, reducing ablation loss.

High wear resistance and mechanical strength: The combination of tungsten hardness and copper toughness gives the material high wear resistance and impact resistance, which is suitable for high-frequency contact scenarios such as valves and electrodes.

Controllable thermal expansion coefficient: By adjusting the tungsten-copper ratio, matching the thermal expansion coefficient of materials such as ceramics and semiconductors, and reducing package thermal stress.

Processing and application advantages

Easy to process: Supports machining such as turning, stamping, and welding, and can be well connected with supporting parts such as copper and steel.

Diversified forms: It can produce various forms such as bars, plates, tubes, strips, etc. to meet different needs such as electrodes, contacts, resistance welding, etc.

High precision and low loss: Compared with pure copper electrodes, WCu electrodes have higher precision and lower loss, especially suitable for processing slender or irregular shapes.

III. Industry applications

Power and electronics: high-voltage switch contacts, vacuum circuit breaker accessories, LED heat dissipation substrates, etc.

Industrial manufacturing: EDM electrodes, resistance welding materials, high-temperature molds, etc.

Special fields: military high-temperature resistant parts, aerospace thermal conductive components, golf weights, etc.
