Lead (Pb)6.00–8.00Improves machinability and pressure-tightness in castings.
Tin (Sn)2.30–3.50Strengthens via solid-solution hardening; improves corrosion resistance.
Nickel (Ni)≤1.00Refines grain structure and enhances toughness.
Iron (Fe)≤0.40Increases hardness but limited to avoid brittleness.
Phosphorus (P)≤0.02Acts as a deoxidizer; forms phosphorite phases for grain refinement.
Antimony (Sb)≤0.25Prevents dezincification in corrosive environments.
Sulfur (S)≤0.08Residual element from processing; kept low to avoid embrittlement.
Silicon (Si)≤0.005Controlled to minimize oxide formation during casting.

Notes:

  • Minor elements (e.g., Sb, S) are tightly controlled to meet ASTM specifications .
  • The high Pb content (6–8%) enables excellent self-lubrication, making it ideal for low-load bearings and valves .

INTRODUCTION

Production process and product advantages of C84400 copper rod:

1. Production process

Raw material smelting

Use waste brass, waste copper and zinc ingots as raw materials, and smelt them through industrial frequency furnaces, which will produce smoke and slag during the process. After wet screening of slag, large particles are recycled and wastewater is precipitated.

2. Casting and continuous casting

The smelted copper liquid enters the holding furnace and then forms copper rod blanks through continuous casting. In this process, attention should be paid to controlling the cooling water circulation to optimize crystallization. However, in the early production, high scrap rate was caused by pore defects. Later, the scrap rate was significantly reduced by improving the pouring head design and smelting process (such as optimizing degassing).

Extrusion and stretching

The copper rod after continuous casting needs to be hot extruded and skinned to remove the surface oxide layer and improve the density. Extruded rods have higher surface smoothness and mechanical properties than cast rods because the extrusion and stretching processes can refine the grain structure.

Annealing treatment

Finally, annealing is carried out in an annealing furnace to eliminate internal stress and improve material ductility, ensuring that the finished copper rod meets the mechanical requirements of different application scenarios.

Auxiliary processing

Some copper rods also need to undergo subsequent processes such as stamping, lathe processing, and grinding to make parts of specific shapes. The scraps are uniformly recycled and sold to achieve resource circulation.

2. Product advantages

Excellent mechanical properties

High strength: tensile strength can reach 379 MPa, yield strength 172 MPa, and elongation 15%; other data indicate tensile strength 207 MPa and elongation 16%. The difference may be due to different heat treatment states or test standards.

Wear resistance: The alloy design containing lead (6.0-8.0%) and tin (2.3-3.5%) improves the anti-sliding friction performance and is suitable for wear-resistant parts such as bearings and gears.

Good corrosion resistance

It performs well in seawater and humid environments, suitable for valves and pipe fittings in marine engineering, and is resistant to atmospheric corrosion and can be used for architectural decorative castings.

Excellent processing performance

Easy to cut: The addition of lead improves cutting performance and is suitable for precision turning and stamping.

Good casting performance: It can adapt to a variety of processes such as sand casting and centrifugal casting, with good fluidity and low shrinkage.

Electrical and thermal conductivity

The electrical conductivity is 16% of pure copper. Although it is lower than pure copper, combined with its strength advantage, it can still meet safety-related applications such as electrical contacts. Thermal conductivity is 61.7 W/m·K, suitable for heat exchange equipment.

Wide range of applications

Covering mechanical engineering (bearing sleeves, pump components), electrical engineering (contactors), marine engineering (marine valves), construction (decorative castings) and other fields, and supports customized production.
